COLLEGE PUBLISHER AND NEW DIGITAL GROUP FORM ALLIANCE, CREATING COMPREHENSIVE COLLEGE MEDIA NETWORK
Two Market Leaders Combine to Better Serve and Connect College Newspapers
Kansas City, MO (Fall 2005 National College Media Convention) - October
27, 2005 - College Publisher, the largest provider
of content management solutions for college newsrooms, today
announced it will assume responsibility for providing online
publishing, content management and advertising services to the
approximately 130 newspaper affiliates of New Digital Group,
an online publishing solution for the campus media market. As
a result of this alliance, College Publisher will become the
exclusive national provider of network-based digital publishing
systems for the college media landscape and New Digital Group
will continue to invest in its technology to provide online classifieds,
local dining guides and wireless services to the campus media
market.
College Publisher, a division of Y2M: Youth Media and Marketing
Networks, is an online publishing technology and content management
system designed specifically for college newspapers and the needs
of campus newsrooms. The combined network of College Publisher
and New Digital Group will provide campus newspapers with best-in-class
technology, including solutions allowing multiple users to control
all facets of digital publishing, including content management,
multimedia administration and online advertising.
Newspapers currently publishing with New Digital
Group's technology will have the ability, over time, to transition
to the College Publisher system, which was recently upgraded. College
Publisher Version 4.0 features improved functionality that enables
editors to publish their content with greater ease and speed. The
hosting environment and content distribution network represent
a major upgrade over the system's previous architecture and greatly
enhance the user experience.
In keeping with New Digital Group's open source ethos, College
Publisher will offer its proprietary mark-up language under an
open-source license to foster the sharing of ideas among web developers
who work for partner newspapers and within the open source community.
"It was crucial for New Digital Group to find the right home for
our newspaper partners, and I am confident that College Publisher
will continue to provide excellent service and technology to college
newspapers," said David Hahn, chief executive officer of New Digital
Group. "The integration of these two content management providers
will provide unparalleled back-end usability and the best of front-end
design, helping college newspapers make even better use of their
online editions."
College Publisher's enhanced capability creates the only network
of its kind within the campus media market. The combined entity
will represent a national network of websites serving more than
450 college newspapers with 2.1 million subscribers and a combined
enrollment of nearly five million students. College Publisher will
manage relationships with 62 daily college newspapers, representing
70 percent of campus newspapers with daily frequencies.
"We're excited about adding the New Digital network of online
college newspapers to the College Publisher network because it
provides us with the opportunity and ability to connect campus
newsrooms and student journalists in an even more meaningful way," said
John T. Fees, president of Y2M. "College Publisher intends to invest
heavily to build features, such as content sharing tools,
job boards and digital press conferences with major newsmakers
that will enhance the benefits of membership in the only online
college media network in the country."
College Publisher and New Digital Group will work cooperatively
to transition newspapers to the College Publisher software. New
Digital Group will continue to market its classified advertising,
wireless services and restaurant guide products to campus newspapers.
College Publisher will work to support these efforts.
New Digital Group's roster of online college newspapers includes
more than 130 campus publications including The Red and Black of
the University of Georgia, The Daily Pennsylvanian of
the University of Pennsylvania and The Daily Nebraskan of
the University of Nebraska. The College Publisher network currently
serves more than 300 papers, including The Lantern of
Ohio State University, the Daily Texan of the University
of Texas, Austin and the Daily Iowan of the University
of Iowa.
